12/04/14 Grif.Net – Semester Final

Two students, Robert and James, were taking the same test in class. Both
had the same grade for the Fall Term, and this test would determine who had
the college’s highest G.P.A. for the semester.

Each of them missed only one of the questions. The prof went to Robert and
said, “I’m sorry, but even though each of you missed only one question, I’m
declaring James the winner.”

Robert replied, “Why? We both correctly answered nine questions. I believe
we should share the highest ranking.”

But his teacher continued, “We made our decision not on the basis of the
correct answers, but on subtle indications that there might have been some
improprieties going on during the exam.”

Amazed, Robert looked at the professor and asked, “Can you prove one of us
was copying the answers?”

“Yes, I can,” said the teacher. “On James’ test, he put down on question #5,
‘I don’t know’. And on your paper you wrote, ‘Neither do I.'”
