George Matheson lost his sight as a youth. It did not stop him =
seeking education where he excelled at the University of Edinburgh with his=
master’s degree at age 20. He became a pastor but by age 40 he was d=
eep in “extreme mental distress”. One summer evening he wrote t=
hese verses on the love of God in only a few minutes. Then he stopped and r=
econstructed it as his personal confession. He simply acknowledged this hym=
n was the fruit of pain. He continued to minister until his death 24 years =
later.
I can relate a little to his story, though my personal mental distress ha=
s been of late, now four years into retirement. I am blessed that Dr. Mathe=
son wrote this song for me. We both rest in the same precious Savior&=
#8217;s love.
O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee.I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flowMay richer, fuller be.
O Light that follows all my way,
I yield my flickering=
torch to thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunsh=
ine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me thru’ pain,=
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow thru’ the rainAnd feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that =
liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee.
I lay in dust li=
fe’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that sha=
ll endless be.
