Th=
e recent Hollywood rewards shows demonstrated the worthlessness of the mode=
rn movie industry. Not one of the nominees was without vile language, expli=
cit sexuality, degrading plots, and disgusting characters. And then the act=
ors! Moral society blushes at praise for filth.
The late Frank=
Capra, probably best known for “It’s a Wonderful Life,” =
once observed, “No saint, no pope, no general, no sultan, has ever ha=
d the power that a filmmaker has; the power to talk to hundreds of millions=
of people for two hours in the dark.”
What we watch, therefore, isn’t something to be taken lig=
htly or mindlessly. Christians have an obligation to steward their time and=
exposure to any number of messages and influences, including movies. =
“Your eye is the lamp of your bo=
dy,” warned Jesus. “When your eyes are healthy, your whole body=
also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full=
of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness=
221; (Luke 11:34-35).
