One of my favorite past-times now that I’m =
retired back in Watertown, Wisconsin, is watching out-of-state friends try =
to say “Oconomowoc” (lovely city a dozen miles east of me). The=
y sound like they’re trying to cough up a brick.
But also found many who live IN Wisconsin did not know the MEANING of the=
names of our cities, many of which originated from local tribes, fur trade=
rs, or lonely immigrants. And won’t even begin to explain what =
“Ixonia” (neighboring city between Watertown and Oconomowoc) me=
ans.
=
Your job is to give the MEANING of these places=
in Wisconsin. [Note: “water” may often be part of the answer; =
we want MORE than that] City names often tell the history of each place. To=
help, I will add the original nationality/tribe of each city’s name.=
There are many confusing origin stories or explanations in various languag=
es, so assume this is just the “best-guess-you-have” tiime.
