[Over=
heard some old codgers at the coffee shop chatting]
“When I wa=
s a boy, you could walk into a grocery store with two dollars in your pocke=
t and walk out with a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, milk, and a jar of peanu=
t butter. Now there are just too many security cameras."

Took the grandson golfing. On the 5th tee, he set up to drive straight down the fairway that made a =
sharp dogleg left around a grove of trees. I said, “When I was your a=
ge, I would hit the ball left over the trees and cut a stroke or two off th=
e hole. Can’t do it now.” He smiled and repositione=
d himself, lofting a shot high and left. It didn’t clear the towering=
pines, and I figured he’d lost the ball, too.
As we walked to begin searching the woods, I did casual=
ly mention one salient fact. “Just realized that when I was your age,=
these trees were only 8 feet tall.”

Talking taxes in April, I said to my granddaughter, =
220;When I was your age, America was only 25 years away from having a balan=
ced budget. But today, we’re only 25 years away from having a balance=
d budget.”
