[Usually have a list of lousy puns or word plays as each month =
begins. But this story caught my eye, so opted for a more cerebral entree.]=
King Ozymandias of Babylon and Assyria was running low on cash=
after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the &#=
8216;Star of the Euphrates’, the most valuable diamond in the ancient=
world.
Desperate to pay his troops, he went to Croesus, the best pawnbroker in =
Nineveh, to ask for a loan. Croesus said, “I’ll give you 100,00=
0 dinars for it”.
”But” the king protested, “I paid a mil=
lion dinars for it. Don’t you know who I am? I am Ozymandias, king of=
kings!”
Croesus replied, “When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no dif=
ference who you are.”
