William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was a prominent citizen =
of Philadelphia. Penn had two maiden aunts in that city who owned a b=
akery known far and wide for its fruit pies, reputed to be the best in the =
colonies.
After many years of success, the two aunts had a serious falling-out (d=
etails unknown). They stopped speaking to one another and quit working toge=
ther. One moved across the street and opened her own bakery, putting the tw=
o in direct competition.
It wasn’t long before a nasty price war ensued, wi=
th each aunt lowering prices to undercut the other. Eventually, it got so r=
idiculous that they were both selling their product below cost.
It =
is recorded that the most talked about topic in Philadelphia was the pie ra=
tes of Penn’s aunts.
