04/15/23 Weekend Grif.Net – Really “Seeing” Someone

[This is a repeat of a grif.net blog from 15 years ago this mon=
th. I have recently retired to a senior community in another state, with ma=
ny people helping to make life easier for me. This hit home.]

An RN =
shared the story of her training during her first semester of nursing schoo=
l:  Our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student an=
d had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What =
is the first name of the woman who cleans these classrooms?"

Surely t=
his was some kind of joke.  I had seen the cleaning woman several time=
s.  She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her=
name?  I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

Before class =
ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz g=
rade.  "Absolutely," said the professor.

"In your care=
ers you will meet many people.  All are significant.  They deserv=
e your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘hello.’&quo=
t;

&qu=
ot;I’ve never forgotten that lesson.  I also learned her name was Doro=
thy."
