Many years =
ago, I was interviewed for a position as Dean of a small college in =
suburban Dallas. I had been a full-time pastor about 15 years, =
with two churches that had Christian Schools, and now wanted to expand =
my ministry “beyond traditional Sundays”. Here are =
some questions-and-answers, I vaguely recall from the =
mid-1980’s.
Board: How would you evaluate your ministry as =
a pastor?
Bob: Actually, =
I was a poor preacher. And I didn’t get paid much, =
either.
Board: Do you =
have any musical abilities?
Bob: =
I’ve played on the linoleum since I was a little =
boy.
Board: Your =
records show you attended Pillsbury College but left after a few years =
and did not graduate. Could you explain, =
please?
Bob: I left =
and said I would not return until the president of the college took back =
what he said about me.
Board: My =
goodness! What did he say?
Bob: He said, =
‘Leave and don’t ever come =
back.’
Board: What =
academic training did you receive?
Bob: I am =
educated beyond my intelligence, and like Wisconsin in January, =
I’m officially four degrees above zero.
Board: What do =
you see as a strength for being a professor and dean at the =
Institute?
Bob: Everyone =
says I’m good with animals.
Board: If you =
accept this position this morning, what will be your first =
goal?
Bob: =
Lunch
Board: No, we meant long term goal.
Bob: Oh. =
Dinner.
Board: Do you =
have any questions for us before we meet privately to discuss offering =
you this position?
Bob: Yes. What =
happened to the person who had this job before =
me?
Board: You =
don’t want to know.
