12/04/21 Weekend Grif.Net – In Light of Eternity

My =
good friend Wayne Muri wrote considering Black Friday . . .

Whe=
n my mother died, we took the grandkids through her house and told them =
to take whatever they wanted. As I recall they took nothing. Financial =
advisor Richard Eisenberg explained that nobody wants the old stuff =
anymore. “Dining room tables and chairs and end tables have become =
furniture non grata. Antiques are antiquated. This is the Ikea and =
Target generation.”

Thu=
rsday, we gave thanks for the blessings we have received. Around =
food-laden tables we exuded humble gratitude and contentment. Then, as =
if we don’t have enough in the way of possessions, today we race =
frantically to the stores to buy stuff that will be out of date in a few =
months, broken, obsolete, or replaced by newer versions. They’ll =
end up on shelves in the basement, tossed out, or hauled off to =
Salvation Army. Some of this stuff we’ll hang on to because =
“someone will want this,” which as I already explained, is =
delusional in the extreme.

Yea=
rs ago, my pastor suggested we should want what we have rather than =
torture ourselves wanting what we don’t have—which is the =
essence of contentment and companion to satisfaction and joy. Can we =
somehow embrace this truth and live it out in our remaining =
years?

And=
can we come to grips with the fact that, while our children and =
grandkids may not want our furniture, China, and keepsakes, one thing =
they need us to pass on is faith in God, love for the Scriptures, and =
commitment to Christ’s bride, the church. In light of eternity, =
that’s all that really matters.
