The story is =
told of the trials of an early settler of our area. His favorite =
donkey fell into an unseen break in the rock, only slightly larger than =
the animal. The vertical rock walls were tight and deep, and no =
matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t raise the animal an inch. =
Exhausted, he made camp nearby, but the braying of the struggling, =
helpless animal kept him awake.
As morning =
broke, he decided that since he could not save him, the humane thing to =
do was to end the animal’s suffering and simply bury it =
alive.
Soil was =
poured onto the donkey from the unseen work of its master above. But the =
donkey didn’t understand what was happening and only felt the =
growing load, shook it off, and stepped on it. More dirt was shoveled =
over the edge on the creature, but it simply shook it off, and stepped. =
The more the load was poured, the higher it =
rose.
By noon, the =
donkey was grazing in green pastures. How it reacted to the =
circumstances around it made the difference between its death and =
life.
