As both Pastor and =
Administrator of our Christian School in Wisconsin, I made it a practice =
to have fun on the playground with the kids (giving the staff time to =
use the restroom) and often sitting with the students at lunchtime and =
asking questions and telling jokes.
On one such informal =
visit, I sat with some upper elementary boys and, since they were =
studying the United States history, I went around the table asking them =
in turn to name the states. Some stumbled at their chance, but together =
they came up with about 40 names.
I reminded them that =
in MY day, we had to memorize ALL the states AND their capital cities. =
I do remember being =
humbled a little when one cherub-faced 4th grader said, =
“But Dr Bob, it was a lot easier when you were a kid and there =
were only 13 states”.
