were.

‘Brown Paper’ Pete,” he replied.
I had to =
ask, “Why do they call him ‘Brown Paper’ =
Pete?”
“Well, he wears a brown paper cowboy hat and a =
brown paper shirt and brown paper chaps.”
“Really? What’s he being hanged =
for?”
“Rustling”.
