[note: I apologize for California’s State motto that seemed to disappear
from many screens. Maybe it should be: California – “Black Hole trying to
Suck the Life from the Real USA”. Must have taken me seriously. It was
“California: As Seen in Movies and on TV”]

Anyway, for last year’s 2012 NCAA Final Four Championship game, John’s seat
at the New Orleans Super Dome was in the last row in the upper corner of the
stadium — closer to the Goodyear Blimp than the court. About halfway
through the first half, he noticed an empty seat in the row courtside, just
behind the Kentucky bench. He decided to take a chance and made his way
through the stadium, around the security guards, to the empty seat.

As he sat down, he asked the gentleman sitting next to him, “Excuse me, is
anyone sitting here?”

The man replied, “No.”

Very excited to be in such a great seat for the game, John said, “This is
incredible! Who in their right mind would have a seat like this at the NCAA
tourney and not use it?”

The man said, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to
come with my wife, but she passed away. We both loved basketball and take
our vacation every year to wherever the tournament is held. This is the
first Final Four we haven’t been to together since we got married in 1967.”

“That’s really sad,” said John, “but still, couldn’t you find someone to
take the seat? A relative or a close friend?”

“No,” the man replied, “they’re all at the funeral.”
