I grew up in the “Land of 10,000 Petersons” (Minnesota), did grad work and
pastored in Wisconsin and live now in Wyoming. I KNOW winter. But for
those in SoCal (we enjoyed Christmas in Orange County) or Florida who may
not remember, this is what we are doing in the New Year of 2008 . .
We look out our window in the 7:00 a.m. darkness, see a foot of new snow,
-20 degrees and a 35 mph northwest wind, and it seems perfectly normal to
have school buses driving by.
We see a two-foot snow drift behind our car and say, “That’s not too bad.”
We think of 25 degrees above zero as sweatshirt weather.
We contemplate buying a four-wheel drive vehicle to get through the snow
drifts and we live in town.
We think of a -15 degree wind chill as a warming trend.
We hear the weatherman ask “Are you going to need the shovel or the
snow-blower tomorrow? Find out at 10 pm” and we no longer care.
We hear the forecast “Still and Clear” and immediately assume that means
“STILL colder than anywhere intelligent people would live on earth and snow
piled CLEAR over your head.”
