Hundreds of =
thousands dead from a global pandemic. Joblessness not seen since the =
Great Depression. Companies going bankrupt, international disputes over =
trade, borders and culpability for the pandemic. Reports of hundreds of =
millions of people going hungry. Will I lose my job? Will my elderly =
friends and family be struck down by the virus? Will people I know and =
love lose their homes as they are unable to make payments on their =
mortgage? My goodness, so much to worry about!
And yet worry is =
so pointless. Jesus said, “And which of you by worrying can add a =
single hour to his life’s span?” (Luke 12:25) Jesus went on =
to reassure His followers that if God could clothe the lilies of the =
field, He would certainly care for us, His children.
Many of the =
Psalms speak to this theme as well. They call upon those who listen to =
lay aside all worry and fear, for the Lord is both mighty and loving, =
and has proved that love over and over through His deeds. If we are =
tempted to worry, we need only meditate upon the awesome works of God as =
did the ancient believers who heard these words:
Oh give thanks to the Lord, =
call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the =
peoples.
Sing to Him, sing praises to =
Him;
Speak of all His =
wonders.
Glory in His holy =
name;
Let the heart of those who seek =
the Lord be glad.
Seek the Lord and His =
strength;
Seek His face =
continually.
Remember His wonders which He =
has done,
His marvels and the judgments =
uttered by His mouth,
O seed of Abraham, His =
servant,
O sons of Jacob, His chosen =
ones!
He is the Lord our =
God;
His judgments are in all the =
earth.
(Psalm 105:1-7)
When we focus on =
ourselves, we inevitably see sin and failure. No wonder we worry! But =
when we put our focus on God, we should be filled with awe and wonder, =
with love for Him and His holiness. We are reminded of His love for us =
as we search the Scriptures. Our hearts are filled with praise and =
thankfulness for all He has done. And then we find that there is no room =
left for worry. To God be the glory!
