A cannibal =
king in a remote jungle had a particular taste for missionaries. Most =
were always tasty (though he had to be sure they were properly cooked =
because nothing was worse than boiling friars).
But while his =
people were happy to see the king enjoying himself and growing fat, they =
were thin from near starvation and hoped he would share. Yet with each =
slice he devoured, their hearts sank a little further. It was beginning =
to look as if again there would be nothing left.
The natives =
began to mutter among themselves. "This isn’t right. The king =
is going to eat it all! We need him to show us more consideration and =
allows us a fair helping of his missionary =
meals."
And this, =
history records, is how the hunters and the king implemented the first =
prophet-sharing scheme in the region.
