I learned an odd fact. In Scotland they don’t just have “veterinarians” for
overall help of animals, but specialists like “orthodontists” who work on
the teeth of sheep or cattle, helping those animals be better able to eat
grass. One recently received a call from a frantic farmer in Australia.
“Help sir!” he cried. “I recently bought braces and orthodontic equipment
for 100 of my sheep, and our local vet and orthodontist just died! I need a
responsible animal dentist to come care for my flock!”
The orthodontist was moved with compassion (and the high fee offered), so he
promptly flew to Australia for what he figured would be a week or so of
work.
Sadly, he found that he was entirely unfamiliar with the new orthodontic
equipment in that region, and he spent months in Australia trying to figure
out the foreign braces.
When his at last he boarded a plane for home, after months of frustrating
work, he sighed with happiness at the thought of the flocks of bonnie
Scotland.
“At last”, he said, “I’ll be seeing ewes in all the old familiar braces!”
