This story takes place out on the Wind River Indian Reservation. One night,
three women all began labor at the same time, far from a hospital. Her
family found a deer skin and stretched it out on top of some pillows to
provide for her a comfortable place to deliver. She gave birth to a healthy
baby boy.

Another woman’s family used a buffalo skin for the same purpose and she
ended up delivering healthy twin baby boys.

Friends of the third woman scrambled around and found the skin of a
hippopotamus (a traveling circus had passed through Lander earlier that year
and their hippo had died). They placed her on it and within hours she
delivered triplets – three healthy baby boys.

My geometry teacher said this story validates the rule: “The sons of the
squaw of the hippopotamus are equal to the sons of the squaws of the other
two hides.”
